And an enormous leap. As vineyards fail in the East the vine, originally from Cortez and the Spanish via Mexico, thrives in California.  And, not just palatable wines from native grapes but European vines (vinifera) of great appeal, then as now.

Husmann has left Missouri and is now in Napa.  The Hungarian-American Haraszthy is at his Buena Vista ranch in Sonoma.
