SUMMARY:Bookworm #89 - Author Conversation: Molly Beer\, "Angelica: For Love and Country in A Time of Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:Panelists and featured guests discuss history topics with Angela Oonk in this webinar series. \nBy researching and writing the life and experiences of the ambitious\, charismatic Angelica Schuyler Church\, Beer tells the U.S. origin story from the perspective of a woman situated at the heart of the American Revolution and the founding era. \nFew women of the American Revolution have come through 250 years of US history with such clarity and color as Angelica Schuyler Church. She was Alexander Hamilton’s  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “saucy” sister-in-law\, and the heart of Thomas Jefferson’s “charming coterie” of artists and salonnières in Paris. Her transatlantic network of important friends spanned the political spectrum of her time and place\, and her astute eye and brilliant letters kept them well informed. \nIn telling Angelica’s story\, Beer illuminates how American women have always plied influence and networks for political ends\, including the making of a new nation. \nSponsored by The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan Lifelong Learning program. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n REGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Bite the Hand (Pie) that Feeds You Zoom Panel
DESCRIPTION:Pi(e) Day 2026 is in the oven (we’ve got a plan) and will be sharable on March 12\, 2026 (join us for a Zoom event)! \nOur theme for 2026 is going to be “Hand Pies”: hand pies\, pasties\, pocket pies\, samosas\, empanadas\, meat (with meat or not) pies…Whatever you want to call them and whether they are sweet or savory\, the pies for our next Pi(e) Day should be portable and palatable! (All the other adjectives “ready to travel” that I kept coming up with seemed bad for pies–sinewy? tough? solid? dense? No thanks!) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n We’ll have some suggested recipes coming soon on our “how do I find a recipe?” tab\, but right now the list is a little raw–expect some new info in February. There’s also a link to some general digital collections there now. \nFor 2026\, we will be having a moderated Zoom panel\, “Bite the Hand (Pie) that Feeds You.” Mark your calendars for Thursday\, March 12 from 3-4 pm ET. \nLooking forward to baking with you! Your Pi(e) Day 2026 planning team\, \n\nKira Dietz\, Virginia Tech Special Collections & University Archives\nJuli McLoone\, University of Michigan Special Collections Research Center\nMaggie Vanderford\, University of Michigan\, Clements Library\nChris Nautly\, Folger Shakespeare Library\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Grosse Pointe Artists Association - History of Mapping Michigan
DESCRIPTION:A map of Michigan is easily at hand for most people\, whether it is on the phone in their pocket or demonstrated by simply holding up their hand! It wasn’t always that simple. The shape of the state took centuries to be fully realized on a map. Join Sierra Laddusaw\, Curator of Maps & Graphics\, and Mary Pedley\, Assistant Curator of Maps\, from the William L. Clements Library to learn more about the mapping of “the Mitten.” \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Purchase tickets
