This series of six trade cards promoting Liebig Meat Extract illustrates the process of chromolithography, which was used to produce brilliantly colored trade cards in the nineteenth-century. Chromolithography uses specially prepared stones as the printing plates, with each color of the image produced by printing from a separate stone and superimposing those colors to make the final full-color image. The Liebig trade cards demonstrate this step-by-step process, with each card featuring both an illustration of each step and how a final full color image is formed by the addition of each new color. These cards are excellent teaching tools in helping to explain how the chromolithography process works.
