This American printing of a French map depicts St. Domingue (Haiti), the richest of France’s Caribbean possessions. With the island wracked by slave insurrection in the wake of the French Revolution, many of the colony’s white planters fled St. Domingue to the United States, particularly Philadelphia, where this map was published. A note at left mentions the plantations burned by slaves.
