This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, type materials, and printed ephemera relating to the Clio Club of Roselle, New Jersey, a women’s literary society “for the study of literature and history” and “founding of a good public library.” Materials date from the club’s founding in 1885 through 1927, and include details about officers, the society’s organization, their meetings and activities, and more. Official items can be found in the volume, like the “Constitution and by-laws, of the Clio Literary Society,” catalogues of circulating books, circulation slips, invitations, calendars of events, membership certificates, and lecture tickets. Materials provide details about content of meetings, types of lectures and lessons held, connections to other literary societies and women clubs, and other civic programs. A number of items refer to the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Sophos Club. A hand-illustrated silk ribbon is pinned into the volume, featuring the name “Clio” and a drawing of a scroll, and an unidentified photograph of four children is laid in. The volume bears a hand-made canvas jacket.
