Nannie N. Linscott kept this pre-printed pocket diary in 1876, while she was a young woman living in Jefferson, Maine. Her brief entries describe her musical lessons, favorite proverbs, local marriages and deaths, and the presents she received throughout the year. Tucked in the volume’s back pocket were four rewards of merit she likely received at school, tender hand-cut valentines of hearts and hands, and a miniature note from a friend. This item evocatively speaks to women’s everyday life in the late nineteenth century as well as the small, beautiful things we cherish and hold onto.
