This rare view of New York City was painted and engraved by Robert Havell, while the ships were drawn by a different artist, J. Pringle. Havell is best known for his aquatints of Audubon’s Bird of America, but this view of New York from across the East River and it’s companion view of the city from across the Hudson from New Jersey (which the Clements already owned) are noted for the excellence of their coloring. This view shows Manhattan as a rising commercial metropolis, as indicated by the rather implausible level of mercantile shipping traffic. This lover-level panoramic view of the nation’s largest city is a valuable companion to out holding of bird’s-eye views of New York, which provide viewers with a very different visual experience.
