Anderson, Mrs. Galusha. True Story of Aunt Lizzie Aiken. Ellen N. Sprague, Chicago, 307 Wabash Ave.: 1880. 226 pages.

This book was both written and published by women. Ellen N. Sprague of Chicago printed the book to raise money to benefit Aiken, a prominent Civil War nurse known widely as “Aunt Lizzie.”

Lizzie Aiken (1817-1906) was a widow when she joined the 6th Illinois Calvary as a nurse, at the start of the American Civil War. She served with distinction and at the end of the war she moved to Chicago. There she became a missionary to the poor and sick.
