Two phrenological readings: one of A. Chebot in 1848 by William Byrd Powell (Nashville, Tennessee); and the other of Emelie Chabot, possibly his daughter, by R. P. Lewis (La Porte, Indiana) in 1871. Powell’s assessment of A. Chabot indicated that he had a “favorable constitution and strongly marked organization” and that “In the army or navy you could have, in all probability distinguished yourself. Emelie Chabot’s reading includes a printed cover sheet, Phrenological Character of [Emelie Chabot] given by Prof O.S. Fowler, Phrenological Author, Editor and Lecturer. Formerly of New York, but now permanently established at 514 Tremont St., Boston, Mass. [Nov. 9] 18 [71 Oakland]. Emelie’s reading was signed by R. P. Lewis, “Phonological Reporter” [possibly “Phrenological Reporter”]. Lewis indicated that Emelie was her “father’s daughter in nearly every respect. Inherit his powerful intellect and strong constitution.” He concluded that she was “not enough like your mother for a well-balanced feminine head.”
