W[illia]m Lloyd Garrison, 2 letters to Benjamin Chase, Boston, Massachusetts: July 24, 1865, and February 28, 1876.
In these two unpublished letters (8 pages total), William Lloyd Garrison reflects on the successes and shortcomings of the antislavery cause to fellow abolitionist Benjamin Chase. He expects that further “insults and outrages” will be perpetuated against freed people, but optimistically believes that the nation will continue towards justice. These letters are a magnificent addition to the Clements Library’s strong African American, slavery, and antislavery holdings.
