“William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians” broadside engraving. 1857.

William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, broadside engraving, by Illman & Sons for The Ledger Carrier’s Annual Greeting.  Philadelphia: 1857.

This broadside engraving (an abbreviated version of an original painting by Benjamin West) and its accompanying poem suggest a sentimentalized, post-Indian Removal view of native-white relations. Learn more about the treaty and the painting in our online exhibit American Encounters: Native American History at the Clements Library—  William Penn’s Treaty with the Lenni Lenape Indians.
