Navy Department
Jany 5th. 1816.

Sir,

You will proceed immediately with the U.S. Frigate Java to the Mediterranean, and report your self to the Commanding Naval Officer upon that Station.

The object of the Squadron is to watch the movements of the Barbary Powers, particularly Algiers; and to keep our Consuls duly advised of every transaction connected with the safety and protection of our Commerce.

With this view you will have your Ship in constant preparation for any emergency, that upon your arrival you may render efficient services, should events require hostile measures on the part of the U. States against any of the said powers.

I am, very respectfully,

your Obedt Servant,

B.W. Crowninshield
