Daniel Brent to Rufus King, August 23, 1802. Hubert S. Smith Naval collection.

[Department of State, Washington D.C.]

The New York frigate, now at this place, is under sailing orders to join our small squadron in the Mediterranean.  It is said that She will be in compleat readiness, and actually sail in all this month.  Intelligence is just received here of the Emperor of Morocco’s having driven off our Consul and declared war against the United States. I have the honor to be, with sentiments of high Respect,

Sir,

Your Obed’ & very humble Servant,

Danl Brent.
