The William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan welcomes applications for 2027-2028 research fellowships. Join the newest cohort of long-term, short-term, or week-long fellows making use of the Clements archives for their research.
The Clements’ holdings–books, manuscripts, pamphlets, maps, prints and views, newspapers, and ephemera– are among the best in the world on almost any aspect of the American experience from 1492 through 1900, and support a diverse array of research projects.
There are rich resources in the collections for projects with topics relating to the United States , Caribbean and/or Atlantic World in the 18th-20th centuries. Other strengths of the collections include: Native American history and culture, ephemera, African American history and culture, the history of science, health, technology and medicine, material culture, the history of cartography, graphics and visual art, disability studies, and more.
NEW THIS YEAR: The Clements is proud to introduce The Robert M. Vogel and Helena E. Wright Week-Long Fellowship, generously funded to support fellowships related to the study of historical photography in the Clements Collections. The newly cataloged Vogel Collection of Historic Images of Engineering and Industry is a rich resource of over 24,000 photographs of civil engineering, industrial processes and mechanization of the 19th century, and more.
FOR NEW ARCHIVAL RESEARCHERS: Junior or senior-class undergraduate students are eligible for the Introduction to Archival Research/Forty-Three Foundation Fellowship. The $1,500 supports research on any topic in American history and culture supported by the collections.
The Foreman Band History Fellowship supports research in the Clements Library’s growing collection of materials related to bands, band music, band leaders, and brass musicians from the 1830s into the early twentieth century. The Foreman Band History collection consists of 167 boxes of material related to the history of American and European band music including printed sheet music, programs, broadsides, bound volumes, photographs, and ephemera. The collection includes collections of John Philip Sousa, Patrick Gilmore and Arthur Pryor.
The Clements offers long-term (two to four months), short-term (one month), and week-long fellowships, as well as a digital fellowship without a residency requirement. Applications are due by January 15, 2027 for research to be undertaken between June 1, 2027 – May 31, 2028.
