The William L. Clements Library offers funded research fellowships for graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, independent researchers, creative artists, and undergraduates who wish to visit the library’s world-class collections of early Americana. This year, the deadline for application is January 15th, 2025.

Any project which would benefit from in-person access to the Clements Library archives (searchable here) is eligible for consideration. As in previous years, many projects with topics related to the United States and the Caribbean and/or Atlantic World in the 18th-20th centuries will find rich resources in the library’s collections. Other subjects researched at the library include Native American history and culture, ephemera, African American history and culture, the history of science, health, technology, and medicine, material culture, the history of cartography, graphics and visual art, disability studies, and so much more.

For researchers who are unable to make it to the library in person, the Jacob M. Price Digital Fellowship provides up to 900 pages of digitized material, as well as a $1,000 stipend to support research using the files.

The Library is also delighted to introduce a new fellowship this year, provided in partnership with McBride Rare Books. The McBride Rare Books Fellowship supports projects in the study of bibliography, book history, and print culture in North America and the Caribbean before 1900. Doctoral candidates, librarians and curators, independent scholars, and faculty are eligible to apply.

Applications for these visiting research opportunities are now open. In order to be considered for a fellowship, applicants must submit their materials by January 15, 2025. If awarded, fellowships must be completed between June 1st, 2025 and May 31st, 2026.

While descriptions of each fellowship are listed on the Clements website, applicants do not need to specify a particular fellowship in their application. The selection committee will match each candidate’s project with the award for which it is best suited. We encourage applicants to review projects funded in previous years. Staff welcome any questions, large or small, about whether our resources may appropriately support your project’s scope and interest. Please feel welcome to email [email protected] with inquiries.
