The Graphics Division has published thirteen new finding aids documenting the lives of individuals and families from the 1840s to the 1990s.

Amelia D. Reece Collection, ca. 1899-1900

This small collection documents the career of Amelia D. Reece. Reece was an artist, ceramic painter, and art teacher. The collection includes six original pastel and watercolor paintings that highlight Reece’s skillset in painting miniature floral scenes. In addition to the paintings, the collection includes photographs of women’s art classes led by Reece.

DeVolson Wood Family Collection, ca. 1840s-1999 (majority within 1859-1925)

DeVolson Wood was a civil engineer and inventor who taught engineering and mathematics at the University of Michigan for fifteen years. In addition to his teaching activities, Wood served as vice president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science as well as the first president of the American Society for Engineering Education. The DeVolson Wood Family Collection documents the Wood extended family and includes photographs, books, manuscripts, and ephemera. Several books in the collection were reused, for example Wood’s wife Frances repurposed a copy of Wood’s 1888 work Thermodynamics as a scrapbook, or included momentos tucked among the pages, the 1868 copy of John Greenleaf Whittier’s Snowbound still holds the letter Wood used to propose to Frances and her letter in reply.

Domestic Animals in Action Part I, The Horse, ca. 1898-1906

This intriguing album contains 44 photographic montages involving horses. Images showcase a wide variety of horse-related activities such as racing, military service, participation in parades and circuses, equestrian competitions, fire fighting and emergency response, transportation of people and goods, and funerary functions. Compiled from the works of numerous photographers, several images appear to have been taken in Cleveland, Ohio.

Rev. George W. Reed Family Photograph Collection, ca. 1908-1930s

The Rev. Reed family photograph collection includes 26 photographs, 2 real photo postcards, 18 negatives, and 4 pieces of ephemera related to the family of missionary George Waldo Reed (1855-1935). Originally from Hartford, Connecticut, Rev. Reed served as a missionary on the Standing Rock Reservation beginning in the early 1880s. Images primarily consist of family photographs. An album related to Rev. Reed’s son Raymond’s World War I-era military service is also part of the collection and will soon be requestable through the finding aid.
